SWOT Analysis & Strategic Plan
for Barter Theatre
"If you like us, talk about us. And if you don't, just keep your mouth shut."
-Robert Porterfield, Barter Theatre Founder
For my Persuasion Course at Emory & Henry College, I was tasked with helping a local or campus organization improve and strengthen its brand. Given my love for the arts and entertaining others, I chose the Barter Theatre—the State Theatre of Virginia—in Abingdon, Virginia. Over the course of 2019, Barter announced it was having financial issues and reported that ticket sales were down. Thus, I decided to do a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and form a strategic plan for the theatre to make improvements. This project needed to be theory-heavy but also be applicable for the organization to actually use if they so desired. This strategic plan consists of their mission statement and history, a SWOT analysis, objectives, strategies, tactics and theory. This plan spans 28 pages in detail.
